Org Chart Redesign

My Role: Lead Product Designer

Team: Head of Product - Audra Stanton, 2 Engineering Leads

Overview

The Org Chart in Ninety.io started as a top-down visual of reporting relationships—helpful for senior leaders, but largely underutilized by the rest of the company. My goal was to redesign the Org Chart to make it relevant and valuable to every employee, especially non-SLT users, while enhancing its integration into broader platform workflows.

Problem

Despite being one of the first features many companies set up in Ninety, the Org Chart was rarely revisited after initial implementation. It lacked deeper value for non-SLT employees and wasn’t connected to other tools in the app that drive daily engagement. As a result, it became more of a static setup step than a living, breathing part of company operations.

Goals

Business Goals

  • Drive expansion: Increase usage of the Org Chart by non-SLT users to support client capture and stickiness.

  • Improve retention: Make the Org Chart a critical feature that deepens platform reliance.

  • Increase overall usage: Broaden daily engagement across the app, especially among non-leadership roles.

Product Goals

  • Improve content quality: Shift the perception of the Org Chart from a reporting diagram to a career growth tool.

  • Enhance app connectivity: Use the Org Chart as a launchpad to other essential tools (Knowledge, Scorecard, 1:1s, Directory).

Anti-Goals

  • Avoid building a full HRIS

  • Avoid third-party integrations in this phase

  • Deprioritize print/export features

Approach

I led the redesign by focusing on two major shifts:

  1. From hierarchy to relevance: I reimagined the Org Chart as a space where any employee can find meaningful information—such as career paths, who they collaborate with, and what key responsibilities are owned by each role.

  2. From siloed to connected: I embedded contextual links to tools that matter most to individual contributors, such as the Knowledge Portal for SOPs, the 1:1 tool for manager meetings, and the Scorecard to track performance metrics.

Key Features Delivered

  • Team view & collaboration spaces: Introduced new views that show functional teams, not just reporting lines.

  • Seat cards with context: Each role now displays linked responsibilities, KPIs, associated rocks, and related documents.

  • Tool integration shortcuts: Deep links allow users to jump from the Org Chart into related tools (e.g., open a Scorecard from a seat card).

  • Personal relevance: Highlighted where a user sits, who they report to, who’s on their team, and how their work connects to the org.
